Health Tutoring in Adult Education In adult education we usually pay attention to the teaching content and the competence of tutors and trainers. Quality is defined by different aspects such as different methods, competency of trainers, variety of content and the success of the students. Nevertheless, with the exception of the statutory Health & Safety regulations, aspects promoting and preserving health are usually not an issue for individual adult education institutions. What we are talking about concerns the arrangement of rooms, breaks between study time and sensible activities during these breaks, catering services offering balanced diet opportunities as well as emotional aspects like relations with tutors and trainers and fellow students. All these aspects have a considerable influence on the health and wellbeing of students and thus, in the end, on motivation, efficiency and the qualifications gained by students. Thus we have the aim of developing a concept which enables an educational institution to implement corresponding changes to improve the concentration and receptivity of students, to strengthen their capacity and joy of learning, to reduce sickness and to enhance their integration into the labour market. To achieve this aim the intention is to create a ‘Health Tutor’ from the existing teaching staff of the college who would oversee all matters relevant to this project. Training for this work will be available under the project with funding available from EU sources. The following products shall be developed within the project:
After the development of the material we will be running test courses and Grundtvig Mobility courses in Italy (Florence and Milano) and Germany (Berlin). During the courses we will have 3 phases: 1. Study phase (optional via internet platform) In this phase, the participants have the opportunity of getting to know each other and exchanging information and experience about the health topic. At the same time, the platform provides tools for the participants that help analysing the basic health conditions in their institutions. This phase is organised via an internet platform and is accompanied by tutors. Methods: forum, chat, online workshops In this phase, the participants form a so-called “study group”: The goal of this phase is the analysis of their current situation (within reason). 2. Seminar phase (Grundtvig Mobility course) Seminar/workshop with the topics mentioned above. Apart from the more content-based topics, the participants shall develop an individual health strategy for their organisation and define easily manageable and feasible aims. Methods: Seminar, role play, workshop, excursion: visit of adult education facilities, exchange of experience, etc. In this phase, the participants form a so-called “professional group”: The goal of this phase is the development of a health strategy. 3. Project phase (optional via internet platform) This phase sees the realisation of the health strategies and goals developed in the seminar. It is organized via an internet platform and accompanied and supported by tutors. The participants can exchange experiences and ideas that occur while trying to realise their plans. Methods: Forum, chat, online workshops, FAQ, Wiki In this phase, the participants form a so-called “action group”: The goal of this phase is to start carrying out the planned health strategy. |
